Creative Allies - Sound Garden - getting started

While I was looking for another external brief to complete for this project I got an email from Creative Allies talking about their current competitions. The headline jumped out at me as soon as I saw Soundgarden - one of my favorite bands and one of my biggest influences in my own music.

From this I knew I was on to a winner with something that would be interesting, challenging and motivational for me as another brief for this project. You can find the link highlighting the project and details here.

I instantly started making notes and research. Starting with what I thought about the term "King Animal"
Things that came to mind included:

• Mixed/hybrid animals
• Wise/clever
• Powerful/Strong
• Big cats/dogs/large animals
• Clever wise - owls
• Merciless - survival of the fittest
• Humans - evolution, Darwinism

Initial ideas included:

• Animals against animals
• Humans wearing fur - zoos - superiority.
• Hybrids/mixes of similar built but different animals.

From these ideas I also looked at how I would want the final piece to come out as so I could look at colour pallets of inspiration for the particular ideas. These included:

• A contrast - minimal pale colours or lots of block, bold colours
• Fine detail work in pen
• Dark/black/blank background
• Nature themed - flowers, vines, filigree

I also went through some images and got some inspiration from past posters that Soundgarden have had to look for any themes etc. I found inspiration from artists such as Mucha, John Dyer Baizley and Soundgarden's past posters.
